HILLIANS UNBEATEN IN LEAGUE GAMES Sunday 29th Sept 2019
Steyning 1 Burgess Hill Town Women 1 [Jess Gray (Pen)]
With the wet weather making it doubtful as to whether the Hillians pitch would be playable the game was played on Steyning's Castro pitch as their home game.
Steyning won the 1st corner after just 2 minutes but Hillians defender Penny Gittins headed the ball safely away.
In a fast game both teams had chances to take the lead although the Hillians were not at their best in the early stages , with both keepers in action. Hillians Kalila Goulding Huckle saving a long distance shot well whilst at the other end Steyning keeper Smallman came way out of her area to knock Hillians Sadie Ashby to the ground. From the resulting free kick Capt Jess Gray' shot was well saved by Steyning keeper
As the game progressed the Hillians got more into the action, with Maria Bardea and Anika Wilson having chances to give the Hillians the lead whilst in defence Anna Deignan was prominent and Hannah Harvey did well to head away a Steyning free kick.
With just 10 mins of the half remaining the Hillians were awarded a penalty following a corner, and Capt Jess Gray made no mistake as she scored from the spot for the 2nd game running.
The half ended with the Hillians in the ascendancy.
The 2nd half saw Steyning determined to get back into the game, and the Hillians equally determined to stay ahead. Hillians keeper Kalila Goulding -Huckle, playing her 1st game of the season, earn t praise for some excellent saves as she controlled her area well. Eventually , with less than 10 mins remaining a defensive error allowed Steyning to level the scores , lobbing the advancing Goulding-Huckle who did well to get her hand to the ball.
In the closing minutes Steyning fought to win the game and when they were awarded a hotly disputed penalty they wasted their chance, firing way over the crossbar.
This was a disappointing result but nevertheless the Hillians are still unbeaten in the League. Hillians Manager Luis Freitas made recent signing Ruby Lester his "Player of the Match" on her full debut whilst Steyning named Hillians Capt Jess Grey as their "Player of the match"
