FA Women's Cup - Extra Preliminary Rnd

Burgess Hill Town Women 3 [Charley Law, Caitlin Garden, Lucy Kisielewska]

Eastbourne Utd 2

Unusually playing their first competitive game of the season in August due to the large number of entrants into the FA Women's Cup, and with new Manager Luis Freitas being appointed just 3 days earlier the players knew they had a tough game ahead against higher division opponents, particularly with several 1st team squad players being unavailable and therefore no substitutes .

With Rachael Bowen and the experienced Anna Deignan making their debut for the Hillians it took a while for the team to establish their authority and keeper Casey Dunford was called upon to make a point blank save early on, and Eastbourne headed over twice from good positions.

Midway through the half Hillians Lotti Pollendine had a good shot saved before Charley Law put the Hillians ahead with a high lob from the right, giving the Eastbourne keeper no chance

With less than 10 minutes of the half remaining Eastbourne drew level with a free kick sailing fractionally under the crossbar to beat Dunford. Eastbourne were encouraged by this but stout defending by the Hillians back four of Gittins, Nash, Harvey and Kisielewska enabled half time to be reached with the scores level.

The 2nd half saw Dunford saving well from Eastbourne before they hit the crossbar but midway through the half Eastbourne took the lead following a cross from the left enabling a goal to be scored from close range.

To their credit the Hillians raised their game and shortly afterwards Caitlin Garden scored from close range following a goal mouth melee to make the scores level again.

With extra time looming and just 3 minutes remaining defender Kisielewska fired the ball high towards the Eastbourne goal 65 yds away and to the delight of her teammates , saw the ball hit the back of the net despite the keepers efforts, her first ever goal for her Club.

The Hillians then defended sternly to earn themselves a place in the next round when they are at home to Saltdean on Sunday 1st Sept.

This was a just reward for the hard work shown by all 11 players and new Manager Freitas was delighted to start with a win
