Burgess Hill Town Women 2 [ Hayley Nash, Jess Gray[pen]] Milford & Witley 0
Played in unseasonably hot weather for Mid September, and with 3 players [Laura Nedelcu, Ruby Lester and Hayley Templeman] making their debut , plus Mel Sanchez making her 1st appearance for 4 seasons , the team were not able to play at the same high level as in recent games
although all the debutants played a full part in securing a valuable 3 points.
The Hillians attacked from the start , forcing a corner in the 1st minute and within 9 minutes they went ahead following a well directed Jess Gray corner , an Anna Deignan header being diverted into the net via a Hayley Nash shoulder.
Captain Gray shot over when free before Milford brought the best out of the Hillians back four of Penny Gittins, Anika Wilson , Hayley Nash and Hannah Harvey before the ball was finally blocked for a corner .
Midway through the half Laura Nedelcu made her debut and showed she will be an asset to the team. The Hillians defence was very much in control , with Keeper Ella Bates having little to do. In midfield the experienced Hayley Templeman did well alongside Dreignan whilst up front there were some good passing moves and forward Charley Laws' runs required the Milford keeper to anticipate well on several occasions
Towards the end of the half Milford got more into the game and shot over from a good position, however at the interval the Hillians held onto their 1-0 lead
The 2nd half commenced with Law forcing a corner from which Gittins headed wide , before Law was injured and replaced by Mel Sanchez . The play became rather scrappy from both sides , although Sadie Ashby had a shot saved. The Hillians did put the ball into the net , the hard working Maria Bardea "scoring " from a well directed pass from Sanchez but was controversially deemed to be offside.
Both sides had their chances, with the Milford keeper on occasions rushing outside of her area to thwart the Hillians attackers but eventually determined work by Rachael Bowen saw her fouled in the penalty area and to the delight of her teammates, Captain Gray made no mistake from the penalty spot to put her team 2-0 ahead.
The Hillians were generally in control for the rest of the game despite Milford's efforts. Hillians Manager Luis Freitas made Hayley Templeman his "Player of the Match" on her debut , and praised his team for their efforts on such a hot day. Milford named Anna Deignam as the Hillians "Player of the Match"
