BURGESS HILL TOWN LADIES WIN in ¼ final of SCFA Challenge Trophy
Burgess Hill Town Ladies 1 [ Jess Gray] Oakwood 0
This was a typical Cup game with both teams eager to reach the semifinal where Pagham from a lower division would be their opponents.
Both teams had the maximum 5 subs in their squad and from the kickoff it was clear that this was going to be a hard fought contest with both defences dominent and despite plenty of effort the half ended goalless
The Hillians thought they had taken the lead through Leonie Diatta but after "scoring" the goal was disallowed after controversially being ruled offside.
The 2nd half commenced with teenagers Millie Morley and Nia Hall being brought on and the game continued at the same pace ,
with the Hillians back 4 of Hall, Nash, Gittins and Harvey working well together. It was particularly noticeable how well any Oakwood corners were well dealt with.
With extra time looming , and the team desperate not to repeat their recent experience of extra time in a league Cup game, they worked hard to score without success.
However with just 5 minutes remaining Oakwood conceded a free kick from around 40 yards out and
Jess Gray's shot found the top corner of the goal , giving Oakwoods keeper no chance. This could well be the Hillians "Goal of the season"
and with the Hillians showing characteristic determination they held out for the remaining few minutes to reach the semifinal .
This was another very close game against Oakwood who made Millie Morley the Hillians "Player of the match"
whilst Hillians Mark Bishop selected defender Hayley Nash as his "Player of the match " in a game where , once again, every player gave everything for the 90 minutes
