League Cup ¼ Final
HILLIANS BEAT PREMIER DIV OPPONENTS
Phoenix Sports 1 Burgess Hill Town Ladies 2 [ Leonie Diatta , Sadie Ashby ]
Having beaten Premier Div side Meridian in the previous round Div 1 Hillians knew they had to work hard to reach the ¼ finals of the League Cup against a side in the top half of the Premier Div.
It was clear from the start that the Hillians back four of Gittins, Harvey , Nash and Jess Saunders were going to have to be at their best against speedy Phoenix forwards but they proved up to the task .
Phoenix were shocked when with less than 10 mins of the half remaining the Hillians took the lead, a well directed ball from Maria Bardea enabling Capt Sadie Ashby to score from close range ,
Half time came with no further score , Phoenix coming close to scoring when the crossbar saved the Hillians .
The 2nd half commenced with the Hillians eager to increase their lead and after Bardea had gone close
Leonie Diatta scored from outside the area after just 7 mins .
As to be expected Phoenix threw everything they could at the Hillians in a game which they could reasonable expected to win , but the Hillians defence stood firm against the onslaught.
Keeper Casey Dunford was at her very best , making some outstanding saves and being fearless in claiming the ball in 50/50 situations,
Phoenix making her Hillians “Player of the match" , as did Hillians Manager Mark Bishop .
Phoenix did reduce the deficit through an unexpected unhurried defensive error and also hit the post but in a game where the Hillians were not at their very best
no one could doubt that they deserved any luck going for their unrelenting determination and hard work.
Hillians reward for their over 100 mile round trip is a home semifinal tie against Premier side Kent based Ashford on Sunday March 3rd
